Grown-up Getaway: A Couple's Weekend in the Lake District.

Just us, the van, the trails... and actual adult conversation

After months of juggling packed school bags, family walks, muddy wellies, and snack negotiations, we finally escaped to the Lake District for a grown-up weekend away – and wow, what a difference it makes travelling light!

We packed up the van (so much quicker without all the kid gear) and set off for a short break, just the two of us. Our base for the weekend was Coniston Hall Campsite, perched right beside the lake with everything you could need for a peaceful stay. Once pitched up, we took the short walk into town and landed at The Black Bull Inn – great pints, delicious food, and that cosy pub atmosphere you just can’t beat. After a slightly wobbly wander back, we lit the campfire, toasted marshmallows, and actually had full, uninterrupted conversations under the stars. Bliss!

Up the Old Man

The next morning, bacon butties and a brew set us up perfectly for the day ahead. We packed a picnic and set off on a hike up Coniston Old Man, setting out right from the campsite. Despite the light drizzle on and off, it kept us cool and didn’t dampen our spirits. By the time we reached the top, the clouds had lifted and the views across the lakes were absolutely stunning.

We took our time coming back down and couldn’t resist a quick stop at The Ship Inn for a rest (and maybe another pint) before making our way back to the site. Another peaceful night followed – campfire lit, stars above, and hearts full.

Here's the OS Map of the route we did, we made it circular(ish) for the different views.

Plans (and a Snoozed Alarm)

We meant to get up early and launch the kayak from the site straight onto the lake – it’s super easy to do here – but the peace clearly got to us, and we slept right through the alarm. Not a bad problem to have!

Instead, after a chilled pack-down (again, quicker without all the kid kit!), we headed to Grizedale Forest for a bit of biking. It was such a fun way to end the weekend. The dog came along and loved the trails, and while I stuck to the easier tracks with her, the other half had a blast trying some of the tougher routes. There’s so much to see there – gorgeous woodland, wildlife, and views in every direction.

If biking’s not your thing, Grizedale also offers Go Ape, sculptures to discover in the forest, and a lovely café that serves really good food and drink. Check out more about Grizedale Forest here.

Tired Legs, Happy Hearts

We rolled home with tired legs, a very sleepy dog, and that familiar post-adventure calm that only time outdoors can bring. It’s amazing how restorative nature can be – especially when paired with laughter, firelight, and a little grown-up space.

Not that we’d ever trade life with the little ones, but sometimes, stepping away for just a moment reminds you of all the things that brought you together in the first place.
