🚶‍♀️A Day Out in Shelley: Woodland Wanders, Campervans & Ice Cream 🍦

I posted a few weeks ago on social media about our trip out to Shelley but amongst all the busy schedules, I haven't had the time to write here - so apologies.

We set off from C & H Campervan Conversions, tucked away in Shelley (HD8) near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire; just me and the pooch, whilst the pop top was being fitted.

1. The Starting Line – C & H HQ

Your journey begins at C & H, as we waited for a few updates on our camper, I laced up my boots and set off to explore the surrounding countryside. With the OS Maps route ready (see it here), we took off on foot, straight into the hills.

2. Through the Heart of Shelley

The route takes you through the lane-lined outskirts of Shelley, where old stone walls and scattered farmsteads paint a soothing rural scene. If you're lucky, spring lambs and curious sheep add a pastoral soundtrack to the walk.

3. Sweeping Ridge Views

Climbing gently out of the village, the path rewards with ridge views —ideal for pausing with a flask and soaking it all in.

4. Woodland Wanders

One of the highlights is a centuries-old woodland section, where dappled light filters through oak and beech. It’s a peaceful interlude, with earthy scents and birdsong; I stopped to listen 🎶

5. Village Charm

The walk passes near Shelley’s charming village centre. This is a lovely spot to take a breather— to enjoy a pop into a local shop, or simply soak up community life.

6. Return Through Fields

The second half leads over gently rolling farmland. The patchwork of fields, hedgerows, and glimpsed farmhouses offers a perfect Yorkshire countryside experience before looping back to C & H.

Post -Walk Treat: Dearne Lea Tea Rooms & Ice Cream

On our return, we still had some time to wait, so after building up an appetite, we made a well-earned stop at Dearne Lea Tea Rooms - why not?! With homemade cakes, Yorkshire tea, and creamy farm-made ice cream, it was the perfect pitstop. We sat outside and rested our tired legs with a lovely scone and coffee.

Whether you’re walking with kids or just love a sweet treat post-adventure, this spot is a must.

Winding Down: A Wander Around Pennine Garden Centre

With my sweet tooth satisfied, we ended the day at Pennine Garden Centre — just a few minutes' walk from C & H or a short drive from Shelley. Not only is it dog-friendly, but it’s also full of gorgeous plants, quirky garden gifts, and a calming atmosphere.

We meandered through the plants, and just enjoyed the slow pace. If you’re looking for somewhere to decompress after your walk, this is it.

Why I Enjoyed This Route

Proximity to the shop

Gentle, scenic route — Ideal for walkers of all abilities, with varied terrain.

Tea room + ice cream —Adds a lovely treat to the walk.

Garden Centre — Peaceful way to wind down, and great for plant lovers.

Top Tips for Your Visit

Wear sturdy boots – the fields and woodland paths can be muddy.

Bring some change for tea rooms or the garden centre.

Dogs welcome at Pennine Garden Centre.

Final Thoughts

There’s something really grounding about combining practical life (like the van conversion) with peaceful nature and sweet local spots. This Shelley circular walk reminded me why I love exploring: it’s full of unexpected gems, homemade ice cream, and a pace that suits the soul. If you’re near Shelley or planning a visit to C & H Campervan Conversions, make a day of it — stretch your legs, treat yourself, and don’t forget to grab a plant before you go home 🌿
